Glenn Crossin, Ph.D.
Professor
I study the physiological mechanisms that underlie variation in life-history traits, mostly (but not exclusively!) in birds and fish. I received my BSc from the University of New Hampshire, my MSc and PhD from the University of British Columbia, and pursued postdoctoral studies at Simon Fraser University, the British Antarctic Survey, and Fisheries & Oceans Canada.
Editorial board member, Biology Letters
Associate Editor, Marine Ornithology

Natalie Koopman, MSc student
Natalie is originally from Kingston, Ontario where she grew up appreciating her surrounding environment with lots of canoe camping and hiking. After a high school trip to Bamfield Marine Science Centre on Vancouver Island, she knew she wanted to be involved with ocean science and thus completed a bachelor of science in biology and chemistry at Acadia University on the Bay of Fundy. Natalie's passion for marine ecosystems grew when working for NGO's Coastal Action and the LaHave River Salmon Association alongside completing her honours research at Acadia. Now, she is continuing her academic career by pursuing a MSc in biology at Dalhousie University using acoustic telemetry to collect vital information on two salmon populations in Cape Breton. In collaboration with Parks Canada, Natalie is researching the spawning behaviour of smolt-adult-supplementation (SAS) salmon in the Clyburn Brook using acoustic telemetry. Natalie will compare the migration and overwintering strategies of two geographically close and similar salmon populations in the Chéticamp River and Clyburn Brook in Cape Breton, NS. These data will help better understand SAS salmon movements and inform population recovery.

Catherine Potvin, Honours student
I am a mature student of 27 years old. I grew up in Sorel-Tracy, Québec and moved to Halifax in 2019 because of the military. I am doing an honours in environmental science with a minor in biology and a certificate in GIS.
During my free time I like camping, hiking, kayaking, going to the beach, or any outdoor activities. I am passionate about the understanding of possible impact of anthropogenic pollution on ecosystems. I would like to help developing solutions that contribute to the restoration of land and preventing biodiversity loss.
I am currently working as a research assistant with Dr. Manon Sorais on a project examining the declines of Leach's storm petrels in Atlantic Canada.
Sasha Chilibeck, Honours student
I am originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and am joining the Crossin lab as an Honour's student investigating the pre-breeding migration behaviour of Leach's Storm-Petrels. Currently, I am in the process of completing my fifth year double majoring in Environmental Science and Biology with certificates in Environmental Impact Assessment and GIS. I am very passionate about birds from my upbringing beneath one of Canada's largest migratory flyways in Saskatchewan, and this passion has taken me to doing all sorts of work revolving around birds. I have recently completed a field technician position with Birds Canada to monitor Bicknell's Thrushes in the mountains of New Brunswick, and occasionally do bird surveys for consultant companies. I also help lead Dalhousie's own Birding Society, through which I help other students to learn about birds and getting involved in ornithology. I hope that my Honour's project will help contribute to better understanding Leach's Storm-Petrel ecology and how their feeding/migratory activities may be impacted by offshore wind development in the Maritimes..

Claire Rycroft, MSc. candidate
Claire is working closely with DFO researchers to determine the interactions between migrating salmon smolts and aquaculture infrastructure in Passamaquoddy Bay, a region of eastern Canada with an abundance of salmon farms. Using acoustic telemetry, fundamental aspects of migrating smolt residency times around farms will be quantified, and patterns will be viewed relative to differential gene expression patterns among individuals.
